American colonial architecture goes all the way back to the Mayflower. We're talking about the 17th century here! Centuries later, it is still a style that modern architects draw inspiration from. Architectural historians typically characterize Colonial-style houses by their symmetry, centered doors, and rectangular shapes. Of course, colonial architecture has evolved over time and there are many ways to change and modernize them. We've rounded up 14 charming colonial-style homes with updates to draw inspiration from.

Not every owner of a colonial house can inherit a house with a spacious terrace like this. But now with the trend for outdoor living spaces, this is a great time to invest in a patio! A virtual exterior designer can help you select everything from pillars to swings. When adding the patio, you can decide to stay true to the period with grand columns or modernize it with wood or industrial steel.

Just by looking at this house, we're guessing the short side was added later. In fact, colonial-style houses are notoriously easy to add on to. However, our designers improved the balance of this exterior design by extending the front steps with a porch overhang. Finally, see how the tall, narrow windows now stand out with the new functional shutters.

In an effort to rotate the amazing symmetry of our house, our designers made the garage stand out as a separate unit with dark, interesting garage doors and industrial lighting. The copper awning and wooden fence add warmth and a classic touch to the updated exterior.

The Colonial House: A Home Style That Stands Apart

A colonial home is a timeless structure, so why not appreciate its beauty with some classic tones? Off-white, pale beige and gray are safe paint choices for historic colonial style homes. Before painting your historic home, check with your city or homeowners association about the regulations in your area.

The owner of this house wants to be simple. Sometimes shutters overwhelm colonial-style houses with multiple windows. Such is the case with this one. In fact, many colonies have shutters that are not quite the right size. If this is the case, you may choose to remove the shutters entirely and not replace them.

Houses built between the end of the Great Depression and the end of World War II are known as traditional minimal houses. Built on a budget, these houses have a simple frame and great potential. Since most of these homes also exhibit colonial characteristics, such as symmetry and centered doors, adding architectural details can play into that look. Notice how the gabled porch with its layered architectural detailing makes this home even more colonial!

When Europeans colonized the Americas, they brought architectural styles with them. This modern house still has influences from the Netherlands, so we would consider it a Dutch Colonial Revival. The cozy side porch with two chairs draws even more attention to the gambrel roof.

British Colonial Architecture — Attitude Design Interiors

As we've said, colonial homes are perfect candidates for additions. What better way to complement architecture than to lean towards symmetry? We also love the updated wood columns, stairs and railings.

If you can't find a historic colonial house, you can always build one with similar characteristics. Small details like wide columns and wooden doors can really make your home look right over time. However, you can take it a step further with a bronze gutter, like this one from talangsupply.

If you're considering updating your colonial home with a new coat of paint, white paint is usually a safe bet. Some of our favorite off-white paints for outdoor applications are by Benjamin Moore, including Swiss Coffee, Simply White and White Dove.

Many colonial houses had stone cladding. We find that painting is a way to appreciate a home's history and style while updating the look. This house lacks the basics to keep it looking homey. One way to solve this is to add a stone water table or cutting board before your house meets the landscape.

Best Colonial Style Houses That Are Incredibly Charming

With lots of large windows, this architectural style allows for lots of natural light. Why not also play in the air at the front door? This door from Dallas Door Services does just that.

This English-Tudor-meets-colonial has touches of brick here and there. Rather than leaving it unpainted, our virtual exterior designers recommend mineral-based paint. The whitewashed look leans towards a historic feel and really compliments the gray paint choice!

This before picture of the house gives us a French colonial feel. HAPPY... almost hate painting unless it's necessary or you're tired of it. Our exterior designer decided to lean into it with gray-blue and white paint and copper architectural details. Copper is one of those building materials that only gets better with age. Top it off with some Bevolo lights and you've got yourself a timeless yet updated design.

Both newly built and historic colonial-style homes have great potential. Updating the paint, columns, shutters, porch lights and seating can really take your home to the next level.
